democracy in action

I present the following nominated fst month themes without comment commented all to hell, because I'm a catty bastard tonight:

Drugs (because I want five thousand copies of 'The Perfect Drug' made available to me)

Mistakes (okay, while this could be cool in a 'oops I caused the Third Impact' way, it's more likely to be 'an fst for the time I broke my special Prince of Tennis watch')

Seven deadly sins (I'm thinking of starting a 'sloth' fansite, myself)

Rainbow (search iTunes for songs with colours in title, lather, rinse, repeat)

Nature (those $9.99 classical CDs they sell at Target have totally beaten you to it, man)

World historic events: battles, usurpings, crownings, invasions, etc. (a student of mine asked me today, 'What's your favourite war?')

A ST devoted to your interpretation and emotional ties to a color (search iTunes for songs with colours in title, lather, rinse, repeat)

The Victorian Era (logical drive malfunction, no such thing as a fan of the Victorian Era)

Organizations, both real and fictional (oh, just come out and say 'OrgXIII month!')

Canon appreciation (The 1812 Overture! ... oh, one n. ... ... seriously, what?)

Letter: Either the artist or the song title must start with the same letter as your username (I feel sorry for those folk whose usernames start with underscores)

Ways for the world to end (yes, because I five thousand copies of 'It's the End of the World As We Know It')

An FST for breaking stereotypes (made entirely of music that only reinforces them?)

The USA 2008 Presidential Election (only if someone includes the 'Barack the Magic Negro' song Rush has been playing)

FST for Best Friends (again, possibly cool in the fandom sense, but will end up being 'this is for me and my beta-reader')

Hot and Cold (hot/cold otpppppp!!!)

Flight (five thousand copies of 'Learning to Fly,' etc.)

Crack pairings (...shit, and this one's got the most votes of all!)

What's this?!

A rant in hand is worth two on livejournal, or something.

Two rants I've wanted out of my system for a while.

1. FSTs about fanfic? Please no. It seems especially self-promoting when it's YOUR OWN fanfic. If you must FST fanfic, make it someone else's writing. Also: songs from Rurouni Kenshin make you think of Slayers? Because they make ME think of RK. Also also: songs from Slayers make you think of Slayers? REALLY?!? YOU DON'T MOTHERFUCKING SAY. I think your FST might seem more like you put thought into finding appropriate songs to represent your series if you didn't take music FROM THE SERIES. (This person is by far NOT the only person who has done this, but I'm picking on her because she was the most recent.) If you must share the anime OP or whatever with people, do it as bonus tracks or something. Don't make it part of the FST. (Similarly, if the series creator already said that such and such is the character's image song, it's sort of cheap to USE it, i.e. "News From the Front" by Bad Religion for Ichigo of Bleach, etc.)

2. I said this in a comment to someone else's rant, but: HOW ARE YOU A FAN OF ANNOYING PEOPLE?! OR OF BEING MELANCHOLY? OR OF DRIVING?!?! ARGH. This huge influx of what I'd call "theme" mixes" drives me up the goddamn wall. THOSE ARE NOT FSTS. I mean, I've really liked some of them! The one on "getaways" (i.e. car chases, etc) was brilliant and for once I even kept the album cover! But it's still not appropriate for this community? I think (ideally), one reason people might be in this comm and not just joining a theme mix comm or audiography or some other music leecher community is because they are interested in fandom stuff. This comm gives you a chance to learn about new fandoms or to see someone else's feelings on your old ones. Night driving is not a fandom. I don't care how good your songs for it are. The city-themed ones (I think there's been singapore and maybe chicago?) are a grey area to me, but I'm pretty sure "coffee" or "being sad" are not fandoms. I like coffee. I might even consider myself a fan of coffee. But I am not in "coffee fandom" and I doubt most people are. I guess I want to say to people, "If your FST would NEVER EVER GET POSTED without 'anything goes' month, maybe you should consider posting it in a different comm." It doesn't mean your mix sucks, it's just not really appropriate.

That is all. >_> For now.

I try not to be judgemental, but I think I can safely say that anyone who makes a soundtrack honouring their "Goth Muses" fails at the internet. Possibly a great many other things also.

...I realize this is basically going to come down to something of a semantic quibble, but the one thing that always really smokes my mozzarella when we have a request month -- leaving aside, say, the occasional 'An FST for Dragonball Z using only ninth century Gregorian chant from what is now southern France! DON'T TRY TO CHEAT AND USE EIGHTH CENTURY, I'LL KNOW! :D :D' -- is people requesting and making FSTs for things that are not, strictly, things that one would be a fan of. Like, say, Italy, or grapefruits, or the letter Z, or Jesus. (I mean, there are already quite a few FSTs about Jesus, if you know what I mean.)

Or, say, the 80s. I mean, okay, that may very well be a perfectly respectable mix, I don't know, I didn't really look, and I guess I could be just being a big anal butt about things, but that isn't really a fan soundtrack, is it? Or are you a big fan of the 80s, sir or madam? Can you prove that? Have you, say, gotten together with your pals to eat popcorn and watch the 80s in your dorm common room? Have you written fanfiction for the 80s? I'd say maybe something in a David Bowie/Boy George, but shit, why the hell would anyone bother.

Not so much with the snark or the bitching but does anyone else find it amusing that there's an extension/amnesty for extension/amnesty month? It's not bad, just funny.
